Why Drip Irrigation?

Drip irrigation is a specialty watering system which encompasses a series of valves and lines which control drippers. These, in turn, individually water plants. While this seems like a complicated way to water plant material, the advantages and benefits are terrific.  Today, we’re going to talk about the reasons people choose drip irrigation as part of their irrigation system.

Weeds

Here in the Valley, weeds spring up with only the tiniest bit of encouragement. Even light rain will prompt voracious weed growth. Because drip irrigation concentrates water only at the base of the plant where the roots are located, there isn’t a ubiquitous spray to encourage heavy weed growth in the surrounding landscape. Only the area around the plant is affected, and weeds struggle to compete for water with the roots of well-established landscape plants, which also help control undesirable growth.

Hills

A hill or incline is a tough place for plants to grow since water washes downward without stopping to water thirsty plants. Because drippers emit a slow, direct application, the water can seep into the ground and into the roots of landscape plants. This slow application also has the advantage of minimizing the erosion of the soil.

Water conservation

Water is a precious resource in the Valley, and drip irrigation makes the most economical use of water possible of any watering system on the market today. This conservation should not be minimized, as drip systems can save thousands of gallons of water every year. Water isn’t lost to evaporation, overspray, leaving the hose on, or other causes of water loss, either. The amount of water saved by using drip irrigation translates directly to a decrease in the water bill.

Control

Drip irrigation represents the utmost in control of water application. Within a landscape, both the smallest and largest plants will get the right amount of water based on their needs — the correct amount of water results in optimal growth for all of the plants on the system. Also, the homeowner can alter the amount of water applied to plants as they grow larger.

Besides, the whole system can be automated, resulting in less time and trouble for the homeowner, who can ‘set and forget’ the system until the season changes.
